Having had both in serious rock crawling rigs, I would say that the auto, while not as "engaged" or "fun" is certainly the better choice for wheeling, and WAY easier on parts. That said I also drove a Chevy 4x4 for 15 years and could easily out wheel the Chevy automatic with my manual Toyota (of course the Toyota was a much better truck).
